accessABILITY advocates on behalf of all people with disabilities to exercise their rights to establish and maintain control over their lives. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities in their own personal journey to independence. As a disability led-organization, we know that no two journeys are ever the same.

JOB SUMMARY
The Independent Living Coordinator (ILC) is a strong voice for disability rights and independent living, working to assist consumers in maintaining their lives independently in the community.  The ILC promotes accessABILITY in our eight county service area and collaborates with community agencies to best assist the consumer to reach goals for independent living.  The ILC will provide general information and referral for consumers and the community as requested.  The ILC works as a team player to achieve the stated goals and objectives of all our programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Consumer—85%:

  • Provide the core services of Information & Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Training and Transitions to consumers
  • Ability to work with diverse consumers on a cross-disabilities basis and understands their independent living needs to find resources in the community for referrals
  • Work with consumers one-on-one and in groups, both at the Center and in the individual’s home or community environment, as is appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and consumers to expand opportunities for community connections.  Serve on councils and boards as appropriate.
  • Work with other staff to create a network consisting of necessary resources to support consumers in their pursuit of independent living
  • Maintain an up-to-date expertise in disability rights legislation, regulations, and policies relevant to people with disabilities and advocate as appropriate
  • Maintain effective and positive working relationships with all accessABILITY staff as well as other agencies/service providers in order to encourage referrals, promote cooperation and ensure effectiveness of services
  • Promote the Independent Living Philosophy in the community
  • Provide orientation on the Independent Living Philosophy and accessABILITY services to new consumers
  • Must document consumer information, IL goals set, and track progress using CIL Suite database.  Document all community service activities.
  • Provide service in compliance with HIPPA (confidentiality) requirements
  • Organize, prioritize and creatively problem solve to effectively meet the needs of the organization and its consumers
  • Teach/adapt to the learning style (and/or skill level) of the consumer.

 

Outreach—10%:

  • Foster relationships with service providers, funders, service organizations and communities to help ensure availability of resources in the community/state.
  • Provide information to consumers, groups, and others with a wide range of disability related issues and assist the agency in developing and conducting workshops/webinars to educate staff, people with disabilities and conditions of aging about issues, regulations, and rights
  • Conduct systems advocacy as opportunities arise

 

Administrative—5%:

  • Team tasks are met; i.e., assisting with office duties such as answering phone, and filing, reporting, attending team meetings, etc.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Display outstanding communication
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in a fast paced, diverse, team-oriented work environment.
  • Must be able to travel within service area, and if driving own vehicle, present valid Indiana driver’s license and insurance coverage.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in not-for-profit, human services, or related degree preferred; or, at least 3 years of experience in a related position.
  • High competency in Microsoft Office and information management software (CIL Suite preferred).
  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of independent living, including consumer control, peer support, self-determination, equal access and individual and systems advocacy.

 

PREFERENCES

  • Prefer a qualified person with a disability
  • Working knowledge of regulations and legislation impacting people with disabilities, housing, and of housing agencies and services in accessABILITY’s service area.
